Building Information Model

Computational Fluid Dynamics

Among a wide range of applications, PB engineers are utilizing CFD to enhance their understanding of heat and smoke migration and emergency evacuation simulations.

CFD has become the design tool of choice to optimize design due to the high cost, complexity, and limited information obtained by the alternative experimental methods.

Since its introduction into PB's tools, CFD has been used on various projects to understand the spread of smoke and heat during emergency operations. CFD provides a wide range of flow variables, which are used to evaluate any given scenario. Such information includes velocity, temperature, pressure, and smoke concentration.

Using BIM technology CFD studies are further simplified making it easier to analyze different building configurations.

Condenser Room Air Re-circulation
Project Study 2001

  • Ani20-1 - Pathlines to show the re-circulation of hot air from condenser exhaust to intake.

Shanghai Pearl Line Depot Design Competition
(PB was the winner) 2002

  • Depot Fire - Scheme 1 - Shows the differences between a code-compliance smoke control scheme and the proposed scheme, which is significantly cheaper in both initial cost and operating cost. The proposed scheme used fixed barrier + natural ventilation without affecting the smoke control capability of the over system design.

  • Depot Fire - Scheme 2 - Shows the differences between a code-compliance smoke control scheme and the proposed scheme, which is significantly cheaper in both initial cost and operating cost. The proposed scheme used fixed barrier + natural ventilation without affecting the smoke control capability of the over system design.
