Building Schools for the Future

Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

Client: Newcastle City Council

Parsons Brinckerhoff Role: Architecture/Engineering Services

Building Schools for the Future
AURA, a consortium of which Parsons Brinckerhoff is a member, was selected by the Newcastle City Council to design, build, manage, finance, and maintain 16 schools in Newcastle upon Tyne. Parsons Brinckerhoff has been providing architect/engineering services to modernize the schools, eight of which were completed between 2006 and 2009. Projects currently under way involve eight schools plus an adult education facility, a community building, and refurbishment of a leisure center and pitches.

Parsons Brinckerhoff used designs that allow for flexible classroom configurations and individualized learning. For example, the Thomas Bewick School, completed in 2008, caters to pupils ages 3 to 19 with autistic spectrum disorders and includes sensory rooms with special lighting, a sensory pool, therapy rooms, and soft play rooms. The school is arranged in zones based on development stages so that pupils gain a sense of moving on as they progress through the school. The West Jesmond Primary School was converted from a 100-year-old building to a new facility featuring a huge music studio, a large sports hall, a covered play area, and several breakout areas.

Parsons Brinckerhoff also set up “construction weeks” for each school with an architect, engineer, builder, plumber, and facilities manager visiting to explain to students how each participant contributed to the school’s design and construction.

When a client’s mission is as challenging as training tomorrow’s leaders, its goals for projects extend well beyond on-time and within-budget delivery. After all, schools and universities are more than collections of buildings—they’re environments that support efforts to tap student potential and inspire efforts to learn.

Parsons Brinckerhoff offers schools and universities a full range of services in support of new construction as well as capital improvement programs intended to modernize facilities, accommodate increasing enrollments, and allow school districts and educational institutions to operate more efficiently and sustainably.

We draw on 125 years of experience in all forms of infrastructure to assist schools and universities in meeting the challenges of providing buildings, housing, utilities, and roadways in support of a safe and comfortable environment that facilitates teaching and inspires learning. We understand that in addition to students and faculty, schools and universities must accommodate a range of stakeholders including parents, staff, alumni, bondholders, and—for public institutions—taxpayers.

Among the services Parsons Brinckerhoff provides to schools and universities are: architectural, building and landscape design; civil, structural, mechanical/electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and acoustical design; program, project, and construction management; sustainable development and industry certification; commissioning and retro-commissioning; facility condition assessments; campus facilities and utilities master planning; building information modeling (BIM), 4D and 5D visualization; energy and feasibility studies; traffic studies; environmental consulting; and web portal management information systems and controls.
