Mangoola Coal Project
New South Wales, Australia
Client: Xstrata Coal NSW
Parsons Brinckerhoff Role: Project Management (Alliance)
Xstrata Coal NSW (XCN) is establishing a new thermal coal mine in the upper Hunter Valley. The project is referred to as the Mangoola Coal Project and includes not only the coal handing and preparation plant but also a rail spur and loop, buildings, services and infrastructure necessary to place the facility into operation.
The project is being constructed on a greenfield site approximately 12 miles (20 kilometers) west of Muswellbrook and 6 miles (10 kilometers) from Denman.
The scope of the project is to establish a maximum 10.5 million tons per annum open-cut mine averaged over a 20-year operating life. A truck and shovel operation is proposed and is to be operated by Xstrata Mangoola.
A coal handling and preparation plant is to be built to generate thermal coal for both export and local markets. A rail loop and loading station will be built and the export coal transported along the Muswellbrook–Ulan line to Newcastle.
Delivery of the Mangoola Project consists of eight separate work zones to be delivered and project managed under several alliance agreements; Parsons Brinckerhoff is a member of five of these alliances.
