Bengalla Coal Mine

Bengalla Coal Mine

Muswellbrook, New South Wales, Australia

Client: Bengalla Mining Company

WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff Role: Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management

 Show Project Details

Bengalla Coal Mine a 5.4Mt/a open cut coal mine, near Muswellbrook in the Upper Hunter Valley of New South Wales, began operations in 1999. Since that time it has produced coal for both domestic use and export. The mine is owned and managed by a joint venture with interests held by Coal & Allied Industries Limited (a Rio Tinto Group Company), Wesfarmers, Taipower and Mitsui.

Parsons Brinckerhoff was engaged to support Bengalla Mining Company to support with the ROM Hopper relocation project, involving the construction of a new ROM hopper, a raw coal conveyor, upgrade of crushing and stacking infrastructure, and decommissioning of the former ROM hopper and conveyor.

Initial deliverables included the civil feasibility, which led to detailed civil design, construction management, tender and contract administration and project controls for the civil, structural, mechanical and electrical works.

Specific project elements included:
• Project management, including progress reporting and commercial administration support.
• Engineering, including infrastructure engineering and design for haul roads, ROM stockpiles and conveyor slot; site design and geotechnical investigations; technical tender assistance, evaluation and selection during construction.
• Contract and procurement management, including tender preparation; management and assessment and contract negotiations.
• Construction management, including coordination of all work on the site within the defined scope; monitoring contractors’ progress and financial reporting.

As a result of Parsons Brinckerhoff’s involvement, the following outcomes were achieved:
• 750m of new haul roads
• 40,000 t ROM stockpile
• 800t ROM hopper
• Infrastructure upgrades including: chutes, roller screen, stacking conveyors and raw coal stacker increasing throughput from 1,800t/h to 2,100t/h
• Decommissioning of the redundant 400t ROM hopper and overland conveyor

Design and shape the world around you with the powerful, flexible features found in AutoCAD® software, one of the world's leading 2D and 3D design software. Help speed documentation, share ideas seamlessly, and explore ideas more intuitively in 3D. With thousands of available add-ons, AutoCAD provides the ultimate in flexibility, customizable for your specific needs. It's time to take design further. It's time for AutoCAD.

AutoCAD® Civil 3D®

AutoCAD® Civil 3D ® software, the building information modeling (BIM) solution for civil engineering, helps project teams explore transportation, land development, and environmental projects digitally before they are built. The creation of more coordinated and consistent information helps enable delivery of higher-quality documentation, visualizations, and 3D models for construction.

Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design

Autodesk® 3ds Max® Design software extends the building information modeling (BIM) workflow by enabling architects, designers, and visualization specialists to explore, validate and communicate their creative ideas – from digital prototypes to cinema-quality visualizations. It delivers powerful lighting analysis technology, advanced rendering capabilities, and digital continuity with the AutoCAD® and Revit® software families of products.

Autodesk® Revit® Architecture

Revit® Architecture software works the way architects and designers think. Purpose-built for building information modeling (BIM), Revit Architecture helps you capture and analyze early design concepts, and more accurately maintain your vision through design, documentation, and construction. All changes are automatically updated throughout the project, so design and documentation stay coordinated and more reliable.

Autodesk® Revit® Structure

Autodesk® Revit® Structure Building Information Modeling (BIM) software for structural engineering provides tools specifically built for structural design and analysis. With the advantage of BIM, Revit Structure helps to:

  • Improve multi-discipline coordination of structural design documentation
  • Minimize errors
  • Enhance collaboration between structural engineers and extended project team members, such as architects, MEP engineers, and owners

Autodesk® Revit® MEP

Autodesk® Revit® MEP Building Information Modeling (BIM) software for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) engineers supports more accurate and efficient building systems design projects from concept through construction.

  • Design building systems more accurately using coordinated, consistent information inherent in the intelligent Revit MEP model.
  • Analyze for efficiency with integrated analysis earlier in the process.
  • Keep documentation coordinated and consistent with parametric change management technology.
  • Deliver 3D models and documentation to support the building lifecycle.

Autodesk® Navisworks®

Autodesk® Navisworks® software provides dynamic 4D schedules and visualization that enable design professionals to share and combine output for clear, descriptive content that helps demonstrate design intent and validate decisions. Entire projects can be replicated with dynamic, photorealistic views and 4D construction schedules to demonstrate options and predict consequences.
