New water conveyance tunnels completed in October 2010 will serve the Croton Water Treatment Plant being constructed in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The new plant and tunnels will provide modern water treatment facilities for New York City’s Croton water supply system.
Parsons Brinckerhoff designed the tunnels, including an 860-foot-long (262-meter-long) tunnel to bring raw water from the existing New Croton Aqueduct to the new water treatment plant, and two tunnels—one 0.7 miles (1.1 kilometers) long and the other, 0.8 miles (1.3 kilometers) long—to convey treated water from the plant to areas in the Bronx and Manhattan.
Parsons Brinckerhoff worked with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP)
and the contractor to meet the project’s numerous and extraordinary challenges, including blasting for the raw-water tunnel above an existing NYCDEP water distribution tunnel; tunneling the two treated-water tunnels through the Mosholu Fault—one of the major faults in the Bronx; and the significant design and construction coordination required to connect the new facilities to the 110-year-old New Croton Aqueduct without any interruption to service.
