First Kuwait Ring Road
Kuwait City, Kuwait
Client: Kuwait Ministry of Public Works
Parsons Brinckerhoff Role: Design, Construction Supervision
The First Ring Road will significantly improve access to downtown Kuwait City while reducing traffic congestion. The southern section of the road has been in operation for a decade, and construction is currently under way on the northern section. The first phase of the project will allow traffic to avoid the heavily congested Jahra Roundabout in accessing the business district, using a network of new at-grade roads, depressed roads in troughs and tunnels, elevated roads, and bridges. Project elements include storm water drainage, protection and relocation of existing utilities, and environmental protection.
Parsons Brinckerhoff provided design services on the project, as well as preparation of contract documents and tender review. The firm is currently providing construction supervision services, in association with a local partner, on the development of a complex 1.7-mile (2.8-kilometer) stretch of highway surrounding the Jahra Gate intersection. Maintenance of traffic is a key aspect of the work, since the area is densely populated and the roadway passes new high-rise properties, as well as historic buildings. Parsons Brinckerhoff has developed four major detours to manage traffic flow, and maintains an extensive public awareness campaign to provide information for drivers during construction.
When the northern section is completed, it will close the 9-mile (15-kilometer) loop and greatly streamline traffic flow in and around Kuwait City.
