Chateau Lake Louise

Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada

Client: Fairmont Hotels and Resorts

Parsons Brinckerhoff Role: Restoration Engineering

Chateau Lake Louise
The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise is an historic 10-story hotel built in four phases: Painter Wing in 1913, Barott Wing in 1925, Glacier Wing in 1925 and Mount Temple Wing in 2003. There are 487 guest rooms.

The hotel has slope metal roofs, gables, and towers at the roof perimeter, making access to the exterior walls for maintenance/repair very difficult and costly.

Halsall Associates (the Canadian operating company of Parsons Brinckerhoff) was retained to evaluate the various roof assemblies, prepare specifications for the recommended roof renewals, and help design and install a permanent roof access system for the building. Halsall was also retained to evaluate and provide a maintenance plan, phased over eight years, for recommended wall repairs.

The project provided several challenges, including addressing the snow and ice build-up on the Painter Wing’s low-slope metal roofing, replacing the deteriorated gypsum-concrete roof panels on the Barott Wing roof, and completing the work within a very short construction season, all while minimizing disruption to the hotel’s business.

Hotel and resort developers worldwide turn to Parsons Brinckerhoff for our expertise in large-scale building projects that often include not only hotels but also indoor and outdoor swimming pools, health clubs and spas, entertainment facilities, casinos, and retail. Clients demand high-tech facilities that are environmentally responsible and meet international expectations for safety, reliability, and enjoyment.

Our mechanical and electrical engineers, architects, and structural and civil engineers bring worldwide experience to projects that are often on the fast track to completion. In some cases, we work with the client to integrate design standards from multiple countries – from the client’s base to the country in which a new property is being constructed.  We can assist developers in maximizing profits by conducting value engineering and advising on alternative materials and procurement methods to reduce construction costs.
