Worms Are One Way To Go Green

By Andrea Averkiou, Sydney, Australia, +61(0)2 9743 0333, aaverkiou@pb.com.au

Every once in a while, finding a reason to step forward merely required taking a look back. In Part 1 of his 2-part series, the author ties PB’s history of technical innovation and collaboration to our ability to be innovative in the future. In the process, he provides us with a perspective that makes us proud of being part of PB.

Environment Committee

In 2001 the PB Sydney Environment Committee purchased a worm farm to help us reduce the amount of organic waste we send to landfill. Since then, the number of worm farms has increased to three as staff numbers have increased.

The worms will eat anything organic, and particularly like fruit (preferably if it’s not too acidic) and vegetables. Being in an office environment, the worms are fed numerous tea bags (they eat around the staples), which they actually enjoy. Separate rubbish bins are provided for food scraps destined for the worms.

The worms generate liquid fertiliser that we sell to staff for a low price. Th e money collected hel ps fund Environment Committee initiatives. Because the Environment Committee believes in reuse, we put the liquid fertiliser in empty orange juice bottles that we collect from lunch-time meetings.

The worms, which we affectionately call Herman, live on the second floor balcony of our office. Herman has even become the Committee’s mascot!

Andres Averkiou is a hydrologist who has been with PB since 2000. She is the chair of the Environment Committee in New South Wales.
