Technology and Change Management

By Jules Loweff, New York, New York, 1-212-465-5413, loweff@pbworld.com

PB Network editors regret that we did not have enough room for a full length Space Track article. Instead, Jules introduces his next series of articles.

Previous SpaceTrack articles focused on technology trends, especially with regard to the geospatial industry. While keeping pace with and anticipating the latest technological advancements are essential to meeting the needs of our clients, such understanding is only half the picture. People and institutional issues are the other half. The next series of articles will deal with technology change and the technical and organizational issues that arise from technology implementation. We will present:
• Some thoughts on the critical aspects of an organization that must change in order to truly impact how work gets done.
• A case study from the FBI’s troubled Trilogy technology upgrade project as an example of a project that could not keep up with the pace of technology change.
• Ideas on how we can use technology to improve productivity and save time when technology is pushing you in the opposite direction.

Approaches to implementing change will also be discussed as well as some interesting ideas on personality, temperament, and change management and how technology drives organizational change.

Jules Loweff manages and coordinates GIS activities at PB’s New York office.
