Decades following the historic bombing, Hawaii's Pearl Harbor remains a hub of U.S. Navy activity. But the lush, sprawling Ford Island—the focal area of the 1941 attack—has been under-utilized; until recently, it could only be reached by ferry. So when the Navy decided to erect new facilities there, easier access became crucial.
In 1994, PB was a key member of the design/build team that developed designs and later prepared final design documents for the Admiral Clarey Bridge. This fixed/floating structure crosses the harbor waters in an unobtrusive clean line, connecting the northeast corner of Ford Island to the island of Oahu near the Halawa landing.
The project was completed under budget and ahead of schedule. The new bridge's 1998 opening was greeted with great acclaim, including awards from the U.S. Department of Transportation Award and Design-Build Institute of America, and designation as one of the five great concrete bridges built between 1990 and 2000.
