Offering more links to Central and South America than any
European airport, the Madrid-Barajas International Airport
is on its way to becoming a major hub with worldwide connections.
But existing terminals cannot adequately handle the current
volume of air travelers; as a result, Spain’s Airports
and Air Navigation Administration, AENA, has embarked on an
ambitious expansion program.
In joint venture, PB is providing program management services
for the program, which will nearly double the airport’s
capacity to more than 70 million passengers a year. The expansion
includes a new 63-gate terminal complex with a remote satellite,
two new runways and associated taxiways and aprons, a people
mover to connect the new terminal and satellite facilities,
and improved landside access and associated support facilities.
“It is one of the largest airport expansion projects
in the world,” says Peter Wright, PB’s Project
Manager.
