Finishing Ahead of Schedule
|
Since July 2001, PB has served as the lead designer on the Cooper River Bridges Replacement Project for Palmetto Bridge Constructors, the joint venture spearheading the major design-build effort. Dan Carrier served as Project Manager during the design phase, while Lori Hesprich led PB during construction. Mike Abrahams served as PB's lead designer and Engineer of Record. Using the design-build delivery method enabled SCDOT to save $150 million in costs and time, and enabled the project to open a year ahead of schedule.
The project included a coordinated architectural theme with input from the local community. Overall details were coordinated to make the bridge visually appealing—white paint was used so that the structure would blend in with the many large cranes along Charleston's waterfront, and the light poles were sloped to match the towers to enhance the approach to the main span.
