Congested streets make it difficult for the city's 14 million inhabitants to travel

The new metro system removes 2,400 buses from the streets.

ISO 14001 Environmental Management accreditation was achieved in the project
An excellent example of sustainable development

The Delhi Metro brings a much-needed sustainable and viable means of transportation to the city's residents. The project helps alleviate air pollution and increases road safety by removing about 2,400 buses each day from city streets. Special care was taken during design and construction to protect and enhance the natural environment, and minimize construction noise and pollution. Strategies included a system for wastewater management, disposal of soil from tunneling activities in an environmentally responsible way, and a program to transplant trees removed from the alignment and plant new saplings along the route.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation pursued environmental and safety objectives during the construction and operation of the Metro by seeking and achieving ISO accreditation. ISO 14001 Environmental Management accreditation was achieved on two sections of the construction works, making this the first metro system in the world to receive this certification during the construction phase. In addition, ISO 18001 Safety Management accreditation was achieved on one section of the construction works.  For more information, visit www.delhimetrorail.com.
