Designing a Flagship Station
|
In Singapore, one of the world's most densely populated islands, land is scarce. During the planning of Singapore Mass Rapid Transit's (MRT) North-East Line Extension, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) sought assistance in a major undertaking—building the flagship station underneath one of the busiest roads in the heart of the countrys commercial and shopping district.
PB, continuing its long history of service to the Singapore LTA, served as lead design consultant on the construction of Singapore MRT's Dhoby Ghaut Station. The firm also performed design consultant services for the 10- and six-story commercial developments at the stationthe first station on the North-East Line to be integrated with such development. Dhoby Ghaut Station was completed within budget and on schedule, and is an example of what can be achieved through the fast-track, design-build delivery method.
Today, the station provides a convenient, central interchange between the MRT's North-South and East-West routes. Each day, an estimated 20,000 commuters use the facility every hour during peak times.
