A Versatile Structure
|
Designed to create a seamless transition to Atrium@orchard, the commercial development located above it, Dhoby Ghaut Station combines engineering excellence and functionality. The station is situated approximately 40 meters (more than 131 feet) underground and features five levels and three pairs of rail tunnels, including a station box shell for connection to a future light-rail line. The five-basement-deep section was built on a raft foundation, so piled foundations for the buildings above ground were not needed. Among its aesthetic features are two glass towers (10 and seven stories high, respectively) and a four-story, glass-enclosed atrium.
The station is supplemented by a three-level underground parking garage that will also serve as a civil defense shelter for 6,000 people with special measures for protection against possible attacks by conventional and chemical weapons, including independent water and ventilation supplies.
