It was determined that a national radioactive waste repository would improve safety.

The EIS adhered to the stringent guidelines of Australia's EPBC Act.
Meeting Strict Guidelines
Australia's "Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act of 1999" (EPBC Act) ensures that the nation's land, water and air are preserved from actions that might harm them. It sets up stringent guidelines for governments and agencies seeking approval of projects that may have a significant impact on the commonwealth's land.

The Australian government determined that a national, purpose-built, low-level radioactive waste repository-that met the rigorous approval requirements of the EPBC Act-would improve safety over the current waste storage methods. PB's EIS is the first complete assessment and approval for an Australian government project wholly under the EPBC Act.
