The City of Cincinnati tapped PB for a $150 million reconfiguration of the 1.5-kilometer (0.9-mile) Fort Washington Way interstate connector. As the city reconsidered the project, it added an additional $160 million of new viaducts, ramps, improvements, watermain replacements and an underground transit center—without extending the original schedule.
"In real terms, it's almost impossible," said Project Manager Dan Carrier of the schedule during construction. But PB rose to the challenge: the project remained on target for an August 2000 completion. Among PB's techniques to accelerate delivery: in-progress design reviews by the client, time-saving constructibility reviews and division of work among 26 PB offices.
"PB is doing a terrific job," said Cincinnati's director of transportation and engineering John Deatrick in early 2000. "It's easy to understand why the firm has a great reputation in all aspects of transportation design." The main roadway opened one week ahead of schedule, in time for the first Bengals football game at the new Paul Brown Stadium.
