PB served as program manager for the $1 billion redevelopment of GM's Technical Center complex.

One of the main challenges was building an eight-story tower on an existing two-story structure.

A New Tower Fits into a Classic Design

One of the project's most challenging construction tasks was adding the eight-story tower onto the existing structure, an 111,500-square-meter (1.2 million-square-foot), two-story building known as the "podium." The tower was designed to blend into the podium, which was originally designed by renowned architect Eero Saarinen and built in the 1950s. A section of the podium was demolished and altered to receive the tower, forming a single, 204,400-square-meter (2.2 million-square-foot) facility.

The eight-story tower of the VEC was completed in April 2003 and officially opened on June 18 of that year. In addition to work areas, the new VEC houses restaurants, cafes and retail space. All of PB's efforts throughout the construction and rehabilitation processes were accomplished with the facilities remaining in operation with more than 18,000 employees continuing to work. In addition, PB handled the relocation of 8,000 employees who now work in the new VEC.
