To ensure its ability to attract world-class engineers and technicians who will drive its product development efforts, General Motors (GM) embarked on a $1 billion redevelopment of its Warren Technical Center in Warren, Michigan—its key engineering facility for North American operations. GM undertook a major renovation and construction of almost 762,000 square meters (8.2 million square feet) of engineering offices, labs and test space on its Warren campus, including construction of an eight-story, 89,000-square-meter (960,000-square-foot) office tower notched into the existing two-story structure of the Vehicle Engineering Center (VEC).
The VEC is the centerpiece of GM's strategic plan to consolidate its vehicle engineering functions into one facility. In addition to the new office tower, among the projects on the 336-hectare (830-acre) GM campus are a new visitors center; the rehabilitation of several office, vehicle testing, and manufacturing buildings; construction of new parking decks; and infrastructure improvements.
