Waiting at Line 2's Opera Station

15 six-car units operate at top speeds of 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour

Accommodating a peak hourly capacity of 60,000 passengers each way
Landmark under-Nile crossing for Africa's first subway

In Cairo, state-of-the-art technology operates against a backdrop of ancient history. In the busy Opera Station, contemporary commuters hurry past famous Pharaonic images while some of the most advanced cars ever designed for a heavy rail system hurtle through the tunnels beneath.

Line 2 required the first-ever tunnel crossing under the Nile River, including a 400-meter (1,310-foot) section from Sadat Station to El Opera Station on Gizera Island and a 150-meter (490-foot) station between Opera and El Dokki Station. This historic feat, occurring during the project's third phase, was accomplished in November 1997, 8 months ahead of schedule and within budget.

During a 1997 ceremony, Egyptian president Hosny Mubarek boarded the first train to operate on the route's new leg. Today, about 700,000 passengers per day ride on Line 2.
