Local designers provided invaluable input without Westernizing the design

Specific materials were used to ensure the building could withstand the local African climate

Educating the local workforce and providing safety workshops increased on-site safety

Dedicated to the treatment of patients and education of health care workers from all over Africa, the Infectious Diseases Institute serves as a prototype for clinics all over the world. To complete the assignment, PB and the clients divided the project into two phases. In the first phase, the firm worked in Kampala, using the client's specifications and budget to develop a feasible design and construction plan. PB also screened local companies to determine who would construct the facility.

"Input of local designers was invaluable," says Terry Green, Construction Manager. "PB strove to provide a low-maintenance building and resisted the inclination to 'Westernize' the design."

During the second phase, as prime contractor, PB was responsible for project and construction management, procurement, health and safety management, quality assurance, scheduling, financial and commercial management, document control and contracts and risk management. The firm also took on the unique task of monitoring health and safety levels to ensure compliance with Western standards.
