AIDS has taken an especially heavy toll in Uganda, where the United Nations estimates that 880,000 orphans and 600,000 Ugandans are living with the virus, making the country one of the hardest-hit on the continent. Located on the campus of Makerere University School of Medicine and adjacent to Mulago Hospital, the Infectious Diseases Institute will have a significant impact locally as well as throughout Africa.
The institute's role in the area’s societal fabric will be an important one, and PB is helping to educate the local workforce. Hundreds of healthcare workers have been trained in the latest protocols of care. Implementing safety and health training sessions served two functions: educating the workforce and increasing on-site safety.
"We are pleased that the high health and safety standards implemented on the site are being studied by engineering students at Makerere University," says Donna Ryan-Rose, a Pfizer engineer. Pangaea's Barbara Lawson, Project Director for Global Programs, adds: "This facility is a model of AIDS treatment and medical staff training for all of Uganda and the world."
