With AIDS reaching epidemic proportions in Africa, serious steps were needed to combat the virus. In response, leading world experts in infectious disease joined with Pfizer and other international organizations to form the Academic Alliance for AIDS Care and Prevention in Africa. Funded in partnership with the Pangaea Global AIDS Foundation, along with the U.S. and Uganda governments, the alliance built a state-of-the-art training and treatment facility at Uganda's Makerere University, where doctors will learn to administer advanced AIDS therapies.
From the project's inception, PB provided design and construction management for the Infectious Diseases Institute, transforming the clients' needs into a workable facility. The 2,000-square-meter (21,500-square-foot) center showcases PB's efficient design, which was developed as an alternative to one originally proposed. Under this design, costs were reduced and constructors used materials more suitable to the African climate.
