Existing track conditions will be evaluated for use in the service extension

The rail extension may stretch almost 25 miles
A multifaceted study

Within the study, PB will examine engineering and planning segments of the proposed rail extension, examining various scenarios for connecting to the existing rail system.

Additional services provided by PB include:

  • Documentation of existing conditions, including track, structures, signals and surrounding land use
  • Assessment of future plans, including land use and future roadway improvements
  • Conceptual engineering of potential improvements, including railroad infrastructure, operations, and environmental impacts
  • Estimation of potential ridership
  • Evaluation of financial feasibility
  • Assessment of institutional issues
  • Feasibility report

The project includes a 39 kilometer (24.2 mile) rail extension, including 10.5 kilometers (6.5 miles) of track to the South Suburban Airport, 9 kilometers (5.5 miles) of track to County Line Road, 19.3 kilometers (12 miles) of track in Kankakee County.
