Many challenging issues must be addressed by PB’s planners and engineers throughout the 12-month study of future commuter rail service to the City of Kankakee. In addition to evaluating financial issues and future plans, other concerns will require serious attention.
The proposed extension of Chicago’s Metra service will require coordination with portions of the Midwest high speed rail service initiative proposed for the new South Suburban Airport and the City of Kankakee. In addition, much of the extension will operate outside of the legislated Metra region, creating institutional issues that PB’s study will need to address. Multiple power methods will also be explored, including assessments of diesel-electric, electric multiple unit, and dual-mode motive power.
In order to better serve area commuters, PB will consider the idea of cross-platform transfers, to allow suburban riders to switch from diesel trains to Metra Electric service. Alternate routings between Kankakee and Chicago will also be examined to determine the best way to reach downtown Chicago, and PB will also examine the possibility of utilizing existing train stations along the proposed route, saving time and money.
