The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) is the second-largest school district in the United States, spanning 1,823 square kilometers (704 square miles) and serving an ever-expanding population of 4.4 million (with 740,000 students). However, decades of insufficient funding have resulted in severely overcrowded facilities throughout the district, as well as many in need of modernization and repair.
In 1997, the LAUSD embarked on an unprecedented capital improvement program that, with a total budget of $19.2 billion, is the largest schools capital improvement program in the U.S. By 2012, the LAUSD aims to have completed 150 new schools in addition to more than 18,000 modernization projects. As of the end of 2005, 55 new schools and 11,000 repair and modernization projects have been completed.
Since August 2001, PB has provided program management for the district's $7.5 billion repair and modernization program. For the new schools construction program, PB provided guidance for the restructuring of the LAUSD's construction group, with 250 construction management staff comprised of district employees and staff from 15 consulting firms.
