Plagued by outdated and inadequate roadways, Louisiana had outgrown its two-lane highway system. To combat the problem, the Transportation Infrastructure Model for Economic Development (TIMED) was created in 1989: a massive project including a transportation infrastructure improvement program to widen more than 500 miles of Louisiana roadways (U.S. and state highways) and provide improvements to the Port of New Orleans and New Orleans International Airport. The TIMED program legislation provided for an additional $0.04 gas and special fuels tax in the state, projected to bring in more than $100 million in revenues each year to fund the effort.
PB, in joint venture, is partnering with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) to manage the acceleration of the completion of the remaining TIMED project segments in the DOTD’s highway and bridge program—totaling $3 billion in infrastructure. Over the next five years, PB will work to complete the 11 remaining projects, connecting the state in a wider transportation network in an effort to enhance economic development.
