Making an Olympic deadline
|
The PB-led joint venture supporting MARTA utilized quality management, value engineering and "look-ahead scheduling" to cut 15 months off normal construction time to open the 11.3-kilometer (7-mile) North Line extension to Dunwoody Station in time to provide service for the 1996 Summer Olympics. In addition, accelerated procurement, installation and testing plans enabled initial ITS programs to be installed and operating on MARTA buses in time for the Olympics. The joint venture staff assisted MARTA in saving $58 million through negotiated competitive procurement on the purchase of 100 new rail cars and alternating current propulsion conversion kits for 120 of the older direct current cars.
MARTA and the PB-led joint venture have won numerous awards for outstanding excellence in design and construction work from organizations such as the American Consulting Engineers Council, American Road & Transportation Builders Association, American Society of Civil Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
