In the Kiwirrkurra Aboriginal Community in Western Australia, temperatures can reach 40 °C (120° F) in the summer. Punishing rain and flooding have left the population depleted—and the closest town, Alice Springs, is a seven-hour drive away. With conditions like these, it is no wonder that the Aborigines' disease and mortality rates are the highest on the continent.
Now that is changing. Enlisted by the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission (ATSIC), PB is managing one of the largest capital development projects in Western Australia: the National Aboriginal Health - Environmental Health Capital Works Program, devoted to improving the environmental health of Aboriginal communities.
To date, PB has worked with approximately 60 communities to deliver sustainable improvements, such as new housing and infrastructure. "The projects PB carries out on ATSIC's behalf," says ATSIC Regional Manager Adrian Brahim, "are radically improving the living conditions of Australia's aboriginal people."
