Post-9/11 changes in airport security posed a challenge as the team prepared the airport for reconstruction and expansion. In 2002, PB's team of architects and engineers worked to help the airport equip itself to meet current and future requirements for explosive detection systems in baggage and cargo screening.
Commissioned to lead the security design effort for the airport, PB provided the airport with an understanding of new security guidelines set out in the Aviation and Transportation Security Act (ATSA) and regulated by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). A security study included research and evaluation of security improvement measures in passenger terminals and all airport support areas, along with the interim plan for the cargo and baggage screening. This enabled the airport to meet TSA regulations before the December 21, 2002 deadline.
PB also provided planning and program analyses for specific ATSA and TSA regulations, and worked on developing efficient applications of Federal Security Response projects. The study included solutions for modifying and enhancing current security requirements for the existing and planned airport terminals, while incorporating the new security guidelines. These solutions were applied to all facets of the facilities development program itself.
