Innovation in Brownfield Remediation
|
Brownfield sites are often contaminated and require remediation in order to mitigate risk and revamp them for beneficial use. The most difficult of these sites to remediate are those still in use, such as the regional gas storage and distribution center in Exeter, U.K., for which SecondSite Property Holdings Limited (SPH) sought remediation. As environmental consultant, PB developed the sequential reactive barrier (SEREBAR), a technological break-through for solving problems in contaminated land and groundwater remediation.
SEREBAR is a permeable reactive barrier system that treats contaminated groundwater. The 656-foot (200-meter) barrier intercepts contaminated groundwater—which in this case contains cyanide, polyaromatic hydrocarbons and petroleum hydrocarbons—and directs it to a treatment system that includes a subsurface tar and oil interceptor and canisters that treat the groundwater using indigenous bacteria and granular-activated carbon.
