Shuweihat Independent Water and Power Project
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates
Shuweihat CMS International Power Company
Completed November 2004
Expanding Power in Abu Dhabi
To meet the growing demands of Abu Dhabi's rapidly-expanding power and water systems, the country's Water and Electric Authority in June 2000 sought to develop an Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP) through an international competition. As the technical advisor to the winning developer and subsequently the owner's engineer, PB Power helped support the development and construction of the Shuweihat IWPP and also invented a significant technological advance to the multi-stage flash desalination process along the way. This innovation provides a more efficient and cost-effective means of delivering drinkable water to the people of Abu Dhabi.

Located approximately 155 miles (250 kilometers) southwest of Abu Dhabi City, the Shuweihat IWPP features a 1,500MW combined-cycle power plant, a 120-million-gallon-per-day (U.S.) desalination plant, 220kV and 400 kV power substations and a 188-million-gallon-per-day water-pumping station. The plant is the largest operational IWPP in the world and features the world's largest multi-stage flash desalination units.

The plant expands the availability of water and strengthens the national electrical grid in Abu Dhabi's western region. It is also an important stepping stone to the construction of the Gulf Cooperation Council international grid, which will provide a significant enhancement to electricity supplies throughout the Middle East. As the country's most efficient power plant, the commissioning of the plant resulted in a significant reduction of environmental emissions―improving air quality and enhancing the marine environment.
