Cables are connected to girders with bolts, not welded into place

The unique anchoring system is a first in the U.S.

Each tower encloses stairs and platforms for easier maintenance
Innovation and new technology: a bridge of firsts

Ensuring the durability of Natcher Bridge was of the utmost importance. PB developed a unique structure, easy to assemble and maintain, with a continuous span between expansion joints—a first for a bridge in the United States. The continuity of the structure between the cable-stayed bridge spans enhances the bridge’s lifespan, protects its windlocks and tie-downs from water leakages and severe weather, and allows a smoother trip for motorists.

The bridge is outfitted with counterweights that balance the bridge uplift, rather than the usual conventional tie-downs, which are expensive and difficult to maintain and replace. In addition, cables are connected to girders with bolts, instead of welded; this dispels structural fracture concerns and makes construction easier. The bolt attachments are also easier to maintain and can be inspected without special equipment.

PB developed a new method of stay-cable anchoring technology for Natcher Bridge that is now being applied on other bridges in the United States. The stay-cables are secured into steel attachments inside the diamond-shaped bridge towers. This attachment system houses ladders and platforms within the towers—protecting inspectors, maintenance crews, and other workers as they maintain and examine the structure.
