Working with the Commonwealth of Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, PB served as chief designer of the William H. Natcher Bridge, and provided preliminary studies and design, final plans, cost estimates, and specifications. Other services involved included:

  • Hydraulic modeling and scour analysis of total crossing
  • Ship-impact analysis
  • Seismic evaluation and analysis
  • Construction-phase shop drawing and consulting services
  • Inspection and Maintenance Manual
  • Load Rating

Project elements included:

  • 1,373-meter-long (4,505-foot-long) four-lane bridge
  • 366-meter (1,200-foot) main span
  • Continuous span of 1,031 meters (3,380 feet) long between expansion joints
  • Two 150-meter (500-foot) side spans
  • Two 100-meter (331-foot) towers
  • 358.5 meters (1,176 feet) of steel approach girders
  • 554 meters (1,816 feet) of concrete approach girders
  • 4.8 kilometers (3 miles) of approach embankment and relief structures
  • Hydraulic analysis of 90 square kilometers (36.5 square miles) of floodplain and wetlands

The bridge was named as one of the Top Ten Bridges of 2002 by Roads & Bridges magazine, and received the 2003 Honor Award from the American Council of Engineering Companies.
