PB has a strong track record when it comes to incorporating
security into infrastructure planning and design. It was amid
the nuclear threat of the Cold War, for example, that PB designed
the intensely safeguarded, underground Combat Operations Center
for the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD).
Nearly half a century later, we continue to participate in
security-related projects, including an assessment of the
unparalleled security measures implemented for the 2002 Winter
Olympics in Salt Lake City, Utah. These projects from two
centuries exemplify the adaptive, cross-disciplinary nature
of all work carried out in the urgent environment of threatened
public security.
PB understands the intricate requirements of security-related
projects, from threat assessment to blast engineering to smart
contingency planning to security training venues. We also
understand that the physical vulnerabilities of our infrastructure
must be mitigated—a task that goes well beyond site
boundaries or construction limits—if current security
objectives are to be met.
PB's approach involves up-front assessments of risks and
threats to clients' infrastructure, facilities, and services.
These assessments can lead to reviews of structural blast
resistance; emergency plans; evacuation plans; facility plans
and layouts usable by 1st responders; training of infrastructure
personnel; and recommendations for changes in site layout
and design. The objective is to maintain or enhance a facility's
functional uses through security improvements. Other important
services include facility inspections, infrastructure rehabilitation,
and consequence management.
